About

Ég, Sig­urður Ármanns­son lauk námi við Grafíkdeild Myn­dlista– og handíðaskóla Íslands 1981 og framhald­snámi í grafík og málun við Rijk­sakademie van Beeldende Kun­sten í Ams­ter­dam, Hol­landi.

Að loknu námi ken­ndi ég við Myn­dlista– og handíðaskóla Íslands, forvera Lis­taháskólans, í nokkur ár. Jafnhliða kennslu vann ég að hön­nun auglýsinga– og kyn­ningaref­nis og ótölule­gan fjölda bókakápa í fyrirtæki mínu sem hét Teikn.

Ég var einn af þeim sem byr­juðu mjög snemma að nota tölvur við grafíska hön­nun á Íslandi (1986) og þótt víðar væri leitað og hef ég tekið verule­gan þátt í að fyl­gja þeirri þróun eftir með hön­nun á prent­gripum, en ekki síður með kennslu og umsjón með upp­byg­gingu tölvuk­erfa og verk­ferla á auglýsingastofum.

Árið 1990 keypti Íslen­ska auglýsin­gasto­fan Teikn og hóf ég þá að vinna fyrir hana að mestu leyti, bæði við hön­nun og tölvu­um­sjón. Þar fyrir utan hef ég unnið mikið til hliðar að lausn ýmissa van­damála sem hafa fylgt tölvuhön­nun með sérstakri áher­slu á letur og leturnotkun. Ein­nig hef ég star­fað í nokkur ár með Mórahóp­num að gerð staðlaðra vin­nuferla fyrir prent– og auglýsingaiðnaðinn.

Kennslan hefur þrátt fyrir þetta haldið áfram á ýmsum vígstöðvum. Fyrir­lestrar og námskeið, mest í samvinnu við Prent­tæknistof­nun, síðar Prent­tæknisvið Iðu­nar og stun­dakennsla við Lis­taháskólann er helst að nefna. Ekki má hel­dur gleyma sam­starf­s­mön­num á hver­jum tíma sem ég leiðbeini við lausn for­rita– og leturteng­dra verkefna á ýmsa vegu.

Ég hef komið nálægt fles­tum þát­tum sem sem fengist er við á auglýsin­gasto­fum, unnið náið með viðskip­tavinum að verkefnum, gríp stun­dum í verkum­sjón og held áfram að þróa nýjar leiðir í tækni sem nýtist hön­nun og markaðs­set­ningu af nánast öllu tagi.

In 1981 I fin­ished a four year study in fine arts graph­ics at the School of Arts and Crafts in Reyk­javik, Ice­land. Then fol­lowed two years in the State Acad­emy of Nether­lands in Ams­ter­dam (Rijk­sakademie van Beeldende Kun­sten í Ams­ter­dam). In those years acad­e­mies in Europe did not issue any degrees so all I have is a type­writ­ten paper from the school office ver­i­fy­ing that I was there.

After that I went back home and taught for three years at my old school. The School of Arts and Crafts later changed sta­tus and is now called Rijk­sakademie van Beeldende Kun­sten í Ams­ter­dam. I have also held sev­eral sem­i­nars there in the last few years. Mostly teach­ing how to use Font­Lab, Illus­tra­tor and InDe­sign and also design prepa­ra­tion for print­ing, colour man­age­ment and related matters.

Along with the teach­ing I started my own stu­dio Teikn (Sign in the Sky), design­ing ads and pro­mo­tional mate­r­ial and also a lot of mate­r­ial for pub­lish­ing com­pa­nies, book cov­ers and related things. In 1986 I bought my first com­puter, a Mac Plus and there was no turn­ing back. I became highly involved in advo­cat­ing the use of com­put­ers in design and have spent end­less time stream­lin­ing the work process to design­ing and also prob­lem solv­ing. Favourite “prob­lems” con­cern fonts and font man­ag­ing in any form it may appear.

I have held var­i­ous sem­i­nars and lec­tures through the years about dif­fer­ent mat­ters, rang­ing from the use of com­put­ers in design, font related mat­ters, how com­put­ers affect design trends and a lot more and worked with a group of pro­fes­sional called Moire on stan­dar­d­is­ing work­flows for the print­ing and design­ing businesses.

1990 the Ice­landic Ad Agency bought my stu­dio with men and mice and I started work­ing there myself lead­ing the way into com­put­er­is­ing the biggest agency in Ice­land. That task obvi­ously never takes an end but it is fun and rewarding.

I have been lucky enough to be able to attend many sem­i­nars myself includ­ing Mac­World in Boston, New York, San Fran­cisco and Ams­ter­dam many times and more.
